Cambridge Cafe – Harrogate

in Harrogate,Oriental

Whilst out doing some post-Christmas shopping in Harrogate we popped in to the Cambridge Cafe on Cambridge Road for a cup of tea – and some Chinese food.

First Impressions:
A basic looking cafe – you’d fully expect to find egg and chips on the menu – with a relaxed quiet atmosphere. Surprising that all the staff are Chinese and to see that there is a whole Chinese menu to choose from. (There’s also a standard cafe menu for your your egg and chips!)

Carrie had been before and recommended the Spicy Szechuan Chow Mein (egg noodles with chicken, ham, prawns and pork) – so we ordered two of those and a pot of tea for two. Our order was taken pretty quickly and it wasn’t long before our food arrived. When it did we received two generous platefuls – no skimping on portions here – of Chow Mein. There was certainly more than a little spice in the ‘Spicy’ Szechaun – definitely a good thing in my book. I don’t normally enjoy Chinese food, preferring Indian or Thai, but this was of a high standard. The quality of the ingredients seemed good and it wasn’t salty or greasy either.

Portions – good size, despite the old adage i wasn’t hungry ten minutes later!
Price – reaonably priced – around £6 each, plus the teas
Overall – an English cafe with a Chinese menu – very different. If you’ve ever been out shopping in Harrogate and fancied a Chinese for lunch then this is the place for you.

Hasans – Kirkstall, Leeds

After going to the cinema in Kirkstall we tried out Hasans on Kirkstall Lane. First Impressions: Looking at their website ‘Hasans’ seems to have been started by Hasan Chaudhry, whose family own the Sheesh Mahal down the road but ‘Hasans’ looks very different from the Sheesh Mahal both inside and out being very smart with [...]

Aagrah – Leeds City Centre

Last Friday we treated ourselves to a more upmarket curry night than we normally manage. We hopped on the bus in to town to try out Aagrah’s. First Impressions: Aagrah’s main Leeds branch is just over the road from the bus station, near the playhouse. From the outside there’s no Asian exoticism to it at [...]

Kebabish Original – Harehills, Leeds

After reading some positive reviews of Kebabish Original on Qype we decided to drive down to Harehills and give it a try. First Impressions: This whole part of Roundhay Road is a bit delapidated to say the least – and, from the outside, Kababish Original fits right in. It looks nothing like a curry house [...]

Cattlemans – Harrogate

Cattlemans in Harrogate is primarily a steakhouse but has a fair selection of mexican dishes on its menu too – its owned by the same people who run The Damn Yankee and Salsa Posada. We took Carrie’s mum there for lunch on her birthday to try the Early Doors menu. First Impressions: Cattlemans looks the [...]
